For some time I have been meaning to wrap up my blog and now is the time. It has been going for 9 years.
While I still see Amit Khot every 4-6 months he surprised me on my last visit declaring that my GVHD was now resolved – meaning it is no longer impacting my health as a chronic disease.
Incidentally Amit is running a marathon soon and raising money for the Arrow Foundation – a charity that provides information and support for Bone Marrow Transplant recipients, families and nursing staff. I have been off all immunosuppressants for some time and without a flare up of my GVHD it looks like this is a thing of the past thankfully. Whilst I am still on a small cocktail of prophylactic medications they too will be discontinued in the near future.
Over the last few years my health has been remarkably good. I was diagnosed with peripheral vascular disease a few years ago. This came about after experiencing significant leg pain during exercise. After three surgeries and associated stents my vascular system appears to be back to (almost) normal. Post BMT I was more prone to such a disease and various risk factors such as high cholesterol have not helped.
So life goes on.
And in the time since my last post our daughter Claire and Toby have married and have a new baby, Archie.
Lachy and Hanna are also married and now live in Tasmania near to us.
And our son Dougall has announced his engagement to Lexi – both are currently living in New York.
A big thankyou to Amit Khot and all the fabulous staff at Peter MacCallum Comprehensive Cancer Centre. You are truly wonderful people and really do make a difference in our world.
And to my friends and Blog readers, thankyou for your support and comments over the years – it has been of great help with my recovery.
And my biggest thankyou goes to my three children and of course my loving and endlessly supportive wife, Jan. I love you and could not have done this without you.
